NOTES FROM TEQUILA

Planning a trip to Tequila from PV, Sayulita, or Guadalajara? Here’s the move: hit the road early and aim to land in El Arenal just in time for a noon-ish tasting at one of my absolute favorite distilleries—Cascahuin or Amatiteña. Trust me, they’re both worth the hype.

We usually kick things off with a deep dive into the bold, beautiful world of Cascahuin, then follow it up with some local street tacos that absolutely slap. After you've refueled on salsa and sunshine, head to Amatiteña around 3pm for another round of small-batch magic.

Pro tip: if you’re driving in from the coast via the new toll road, you’re looking at a smooth 2 hour 45 minute ride. Roll early, sip wisely, and make a day of it!

El Arenal

El Arenal is a municipality in Jalisco, Mexico, located near the town of Tequila. It's considered the gateway to the Agave Landscape of the Tequila Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. El Arenal is known for its blue agave fields and tequila production.

BARS

There are two very interesting bars, both very different from one another, but are a must when visiting Tequila.

El Beso Cantina
Our absolute favorite spot for sipping top-shelf tequila? El Beso Cantina, no question. This place is a hidden gem for agave lovers. Behind the bar is Dan, always ready with a solid pour and a great story. And then there’s Jannet—the heart and soul of El Beso. She’s not just the owner; she’s a six-level tequila expert, with deep connections to the finest boutique distilleries in Jalisco.

When a new tequila drops, El Beso is one of the first places to get a bottle—think of it as your backstage pass to the world of small-batch spirits. Here you can taste standout brands like Caballito Cerrero, G4, Cascahuín, Arte NOM 1123, Nobleza 33, Fortaleza, Ocho, El Luchador, Wild Common, Exiquia, Amatiteña, Cazcanes, Atanasio, and so many more.

And the food? Let’s just say the small-but-mighty menu punches way above its weight. The tacos are some of the best in town, and the guacamole is possibly the finest I’ve ever had—creamy, bright, and perfectly seasoned. Oh, and if you’re craving a break from tequila, Jannet also pours Fortuna beer, brewed just up the road. For those interested in unique cocktails, El Beso Cantina is known for its exceptional Paloma, crafted with 48% ABV Espadin Mezcal, grapefruit juice, simple syrup, and Lechuguilla.

El Beso isn’t just a bar—it’s an experience. Bring your curiosity and your appetite. You can WhatsApp Janet directly at +52 33 2406 1277 Address- C. Francisco I. Madero 101, Mayahuel, 46400 Tequila, Jal., Mexico Hours ( 2pm - late.). If you’re a small crew on the hunt for something truly unforgettable, shoot Janet a text about her legendary Tiny Bar! It’s tucked away in her garage—yes, her garage—and it’s where she hosts ultra-exclusive tastings for her favorite kind of people: the fun, the curious, and the tequila-obsessed. Shhh… it’s kind of a secret.

Cantina La Capilla, nestled in the heart of Tequila, Jalisco, is a legendary establishment renowned for its rich history and signature cocktail, the Batanga. Established in 1940 by Don Javier Delgado Corona, this cantina has become a cultural landmark, attracting both locals and travelers seeking an authentic tequila experience. The Birthplace of the Batanga

In 1961, Don Javier crafted the Batanga, a refreshing cocktail combining tequila, fresh lime juice, and Coca-Cola, served in a glass with a salted rim. What sets this drink apart is the unique stirring method—using a long, wood-handled knife that Don Javier also employed for preparing garnishes. This technique is said to impart subtle flavors to the cocktail, enhancing its distinct taste. Stepping into La Capilla is like traveling back in time. The cantina's rustic charm, adorned with memorabilia and photographs, tells stories of decades past. Despite its unassuming appearance, La Capilla's reputation has earned it a spot on the World's 50 Best Bars list, highlighting its significance in the global cocktail scene. Friday and Saturday nights are the best time to visit! If your staying at Casa Salles- they use Tequila La Tequileña Blanco in their Batangas. DISTILLERIES

Fortaleza Los Abuelos

Tequila Fortaleza is a beloved brand that honors the rich heritage of tequila-making in Mexico. Founded in 2005 by Guillermo Erickson Sauza, a fifth-generation tequila producer, Fortaleza continues the legacy of the Sauza family, pioneers in the tequila industry since the 19th century. The Sauza family's tequila journey began in 1873 when Don Cenobio Sauza established the La Perseverancia distillery in Tequila, Jalisco. Don Cenobio was instrumental in shaping the tequila industry: he was the first to export "mezcal de tequila" to the United States, shortened the name to "tequila," and introduced steam cooking for agave, replacing traditional earthen pits. He also advocated for the exclusive use of blue agave in tequila production. After the family sold the Sauza brand in the 1970s, Guillermo Sauza revitalized the family's original distillery, La Fortaleza, in 1999. By 2005, he launched Tequila Fortaleza, embracing traditional methods to produce tequila as his ancestors did over a century ago. Tours are offered multiple times daily but fill up quickly due to limited group sizes. It's recommended to book in advance through the official Fortaleza website.
