Namibia has a way of stripping things back.

You feel it riding long gravel roads through the Khomas Highlands. Sitting around fires beneath impossibly dark skies. Watching dust hang in the air behind the group. Walking ancient terrain with San guides whose connection to this land stretches back thousands of years. Hiking the salt pans and towering dunes of Sossusvlei at sunrise. Sleeping deep inside private conservancies where the wilderness still feels intact.

But this journey is also deeply personal.

Much of the route moves through the landscapes that shaped Dan Craven — Namibia’s former Olympian, lifelong advocate for African cycling, and one of the driving forces behind the country’s modern cycling culture. Time here is not spent simply “guided” by Dan, but welcomed into his world: riding farm tracks where he grew up, sharing meals with family, sitting inside the ONGUZA workshop in Omaruru, and understanding how bicycles, land, and community became tied together in this unlikely corner of southern Africa.

ONGUZA itself tells that story perfectly. A small employee-owned Namibian bike company where frames are cut, brazed, painted, and assembled by hand in the desert. Not mass production. Just thoughtful bicycles built slowly, by people whose lives are directly connected to this place.

Part of this journey supports Physically Active Youth (PAY), helping create opportunities for young Namibian riders through bicycles, movement, mentorship, and access to sport. The trip becomes more than passage through a landscape — it becomes participation in it.

And then there are the moments impossible to properly explain beforehand: safari experiences across private conservation land, wildlife appearing naturally within the rhythm of the day, world-class stargazing beneath some of the darkest skies on Earth, the stillness of the desert at night, and the feeling that modern life has fallen very far away.

But this RAID goes beyond the bicycle. It’s about access, responsibility, connection, and understanding a place through the people who call it home.

For a limited number of confirmed guests, the RAID × ONGUZA Namibia Safari opens a rare door: a direct collaboration with Dan Craven and the ONGUZA workshop to design and build a fully custom gravel bike—hand-built in Namibia, for Namibia. Delivered on the expedition and ready to ride.

Before the journey begins, riders enter a one-on-one dialogue around fit, intent, and longevity—how the bike will perform here, and how it will live long after the dust settles. Then, in Namibia, you meet the hands that built it—and put it to work exactly where it belongs.

In Namibia, RAID and ONGUZA work alongside Physically Active Youth (PAY)—a Windhoek-based program using sport to open doors for young people in Katutura, one of the city’s most dynamic and resilient communities.

For more than twenty years, PAY has been quietly building pathways through education, mentorship, and cycling—supporting young athletes with the consistency and belief they need to move forward. These riders aren’t short on drive. What makes the difference is access.

This partnership exists to provide that continuity—and to ensure that our time in Namibia leaves something real behind.
